Kyoto Autumn Foliage Guide

Kyoto's single most famous autumn spot. The Tsutenkyo Bridge offers a panoramic view over a valley of 2,000 maple trees. an unbroken sea of red, orange, and gold. The Hojo garden also features beautiful moss-and-maple compositions. Photography from the bridge was banned in recent years due to overcrowding (still beautiful from below). Tofuku-ji was founded in 1236 by the regent Kujo Michiie, who named it by combining characters from Kyoto's two great temples of the era: Todai-ji and Kofuku-ji.

Tip: Arrive at 8:00 AM (before official open. they often let people in early during peak). Weekday mornings dramatically less crowded than weekends.

Known as the "Temple of Autumn Leaves" (momiji no Eikando) for over 1,000 years. 3,000 maple trees cover multiple temple buildings, a pagoda, and a pond that creates perfect reflections. The night illumination here is considered the best in Kyoto. maples lit from below reflected in Hojo Pond. The temple was founded in 853 AD and earned its autumn nickname from a poem by the Heian-era poet Ooe no Chisato, who wrote that the beauty of its maples surpassed all other temples.

Tip: Visit daytime AND evening. they're completely different experiences. Evening queues can exceed 30 min on weekends; arrive at 5:15 PM.

The massive wooden stage jutting out over a valley of maples is one of Japan's most iconic autumn views. Over 1,000 maple trees turn the valley below into a fiery carpet. Night illumination with blue searchlight beam piercing the sky adds a dramatic modern element. The approach streets (Ninenzaka/Sannenzaka) are also lined with autumn color.

Tip: Open at 6:00 AM. arrive early for near-empty experience. The walk up from Gojo-zaka at dawn with autumn mist is magical.

One of Japan's most important Zen temples with a spectacular brick aqueduct (Suirokaku) that creates a unique contrast with vivid maples. Built in 1888 as part of the Lake Biwa Canal, the aqueduct still carries water today and stands as a rare example of Meiji-era Western engineering within a medieval Zen compound. The massive Sanmon gate (¥600 extra to climb), standing 22 meters tall and completed in 1628, offers a bird's-eye view of the surrounding autumn color. Multiple sub-temples each have their own gardens.

Tip: Combine with adjacent Eikan-do and nearby Philosopher's Path for a full day of autumn color. The aqueduct + maples photo spot is free to access.

The entire Arashiyama mountain face turns into a patchwork of red, orange, gold, and green. Viewed from Togetsukyo Bridge, it's one of Kyoto's grandest autumn panoramas. The bridge itself, first built in 836 during the reign of Emperor Saga, has been called "Moon Crossing Bridge" since a 13th-century emperor remarked that the moon appeared to cross its span. The Sagano Romantic Train runs through a gorge of color. Small temples (Jojakko-ji, Gio-ji, Nison-in) in the hills offer intimate maple-garden experiences.

Tip: Walk past bamboo grove into the hills (Jojakko-ji, Nison-in) where crowds thin dramatically. Evening illumination along the Togetsukyo area in mid-December.
