Arashiyama 嵐山
Bamboo Grove & Scenic Beauty
Arashiyama is Kyoto's most scenic natural area, located in western Kyoto at the base of the Arashiyama mountains. Famous for its enchanting bamboo grove, the area combines natural beauty with cultural sites, riverside paths, and mountain temples. It's been a favorite retreat for Kyoto nobility since the Heian period.
History & Background
Since the Heian period (794-1185), Arashiyama has been a popular retreat for aristocrats. The area flourished during the Edo period as a pilgrimage site. The famous Togetsukyo Bridge was built in 836 and the bamboo groves were cultivated for centuries.
