Shoden-ji Temple
正伝寺
A Rinzai Zen temple famous for its minimalist "borrowed scenery" garden that frames Mt. Hiei through a clipped azalea hedge. One of Kyoto's finest examples of shakkei (borrowed landscape) design. Also known for its "blood ceiling" from Fushimi Castle battles (1600).

Best Time to Visit
Clear days when Mt. Hiei is visible (the "borrowed scenery" depends on it). Autumn for maple colors contrasting with the garden. Very few tourists year-round - one of Kyoto's most peaceful spots.
