An imperial villa with Japan's largest landscape garden, built by retired Emperor Go-Mizunoo in the 1650s across three hillside levels. The upper garden's vast borrowed-scenery vista incorporating Mt. Hiei and surrounding mountains is considered one of Japan's greatest garden achievements.

Best Time to Visit
Autumn (November) for stunning mountain foliage framing the panoramic views. Cherry blossoms in April also magnificent. Clear days essential for the borrowed scenery mountain views. Book well in advance for autumn.
