Shisendo Temple

詩仙堂

A peaceful retreat built in 1641 by samurai-turned-poet Ishikawa Jozan as his hermitage. Famous for its beautiful sand garden viewed from a tatami hall, the rhythmic sound of a shishi-odoshi (deer scarer), and stunning autumn maples. One of Kyoto's most refined hidden gems.

Step-by-Step Directions

  1. 1 From Kyoto Station: Bus 5 to Ichijoji-Sagarimatsu-cho (40 min)
  2. 2 From Demachi-yanagi: Eizan Railway to Ichijoji (5 min), then 15 min walk uphill
  3. 3 Uphill residential area - follow signs from bus stop
  4. 4 Combine with Manshu-in Temple (10 min walk) and Ichijoji Ramen street

Best Time to Visit

Late November for autumn maples viewed from the tatami room (quintessential Kyoto scene). Also beautiful in early summer with azaleas (May-June). Morning visits for best light on garden.
