A charming hillside temple with 1,200 unique hand-carved stone rakan (disciple) statues, each with a different expression - from laughing to meditating, playing instruments to holding cats. Carved by amateur volunteers in the 1980s under sculptor Kocho Nishimura's guidance.

Best Time to Visit
Any season - the stone statues are charming year-round. Autumn adds color. Fewer tourists due to remote location makes this a peaceful experience. The moss-covered statues look most atmospheric in slightly damp/overcast conditions.
