Heian Jingu Shrine
平安神宮
Grand Shinto shrine built 1895 to commemorate Kyoto's 1,100th anniversary. Features one of Japan's largest torii gates (24.4m high, 33m wide). Architecture is 5/8 scale replica of original Heian Imperial Palace. Shin-en garden (33,000㎡) with spectacular weeping cherries and water lilies.

Spring (late March-mid April) for spectacular weeping cherries over pond in garden - absolutely stunning. June for irises and water lilies. Autumn foliage (November). Jidai Matsuri festival October 22.
