Jonangu Shrine

A guardian shrine of southern Kyoto famous for its five interconnected gardens representing different eras of Japanese garden history. Most spectacular during plum blossom season (February-March) when 150 weeping plum trees bloom in the Rakusuien garden with dancing miko shrine maidens.

Best Time to Visit
Late February to mid-March for weeping plum blossoms (the shrine's signature event, with miko dancing among falling petals). Also beautiful for autumn foliage. The five gardens are interesting in any season.
