Enryaku-ji Temple
延暦寺
A UNESCO World Heritage mountaintop temple complex on Mt. Hiei, headquarters of Tendai Buddhism in Japan. Founded 788 AD by the monk Saicho. Once commanded an army of warrior monks and was burned by Oda Nobunaga in 1571. The vast complex spans three areas across the mountain.

- 3 From Otsu/Sakamoto: Cable car from Sakamoto Station (fastest route)
- 4 Full day trip - vast complex requires 3-4 hours minimum
- 5 Shuttle bus connects the three main areas (Todo, Saito, Yokawa)

Best Time to Visit
Autumn (late October to mid-November) for spectacular mountain foliage peaking earlier than city due to elevation. Clear days for views. Summer is cooler than city (5-10°C difference). Winter can be snowy and atmospheric but check road closures.
